A wooden fan is judged in three places: the drying room where the moisture comes out of the timber, the bench where each rib is sanded to match its neighbours, and the leaf where artwork meets grain. These workshops build folding fans and craft goods in China's workshop belts — cherry, sandalwood and ebony lines included. Because the material is the product, the paperwork follows the wood: ask for the wood-source statement and species declaration (rosewood-family stock can fall under CITES controls), the kiln-drying and moisture targets, and whether finishing is done in-house — a fan that leaves at the wrong moisture content warps before it reaches the shelf.
