Acrylic displays are an awkward fit for Amazon's fulfilment network. They are bulky relative to their weight, they scratch if you look at them wrong, they crack at the corners under compression, and they frequently ship as multi-part kits that the network treats as loose pieces. Every one of those traits maps onto a specific FBA rule, and every rule you miss becomes either a prep fee, a unit deemed unfulfillable, or a run of one-star reviews about a display that arrived scuffed.

The good news is that all of it is specifiable at the factory. Prep that happens in Shenzhen costs a fraction of the same prep done in a US prep centre, and it happens before the goods are consolidated rather than after. Why acrylic behaves badly in the FBA network

Cast and extruded acrylic are both hard and brittle. The failure modes are predictable once you know them: surface scratching from any unbagged contact, edge chipping where a corner takes a point load, stress crazing around fixings, and separation of multi-part assemblies in transit. None of these are manufacturing defects. They are handling outcomes, and the fulfilment network is a handling environment you do not control.

Two consequences follow. First, protective film and bagging are functional packaging rather than presentation, and removing them to make a unit look nicer at the point of pack is a false economy. Second, the unit that arrives at a fulfilment centre has already been through export packing, a container, a port, deconsolidation and inbound receipt. Your packaging specification has to survive that whole chain, not just the last mile.

Dimensional weight decides whether the SKU works

Amazon charges fulfilment fees on the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, and dimensional weight is derived from the packaged dimensions. Acrylic displays are exactly the profile that loses on this calculation: light material, large enclosed volume, often an irregular shape that forces an oversized box.

This makes packaged dimensions a commercial specification, not a packing detail. Three levers are available at design stage:

  • Flat-pack or knock-down construction. A display assembled by the end user ships in a fraction of the volume. It also changes the product experience, so it is a positioning decision as much as a logistics one.
  • Nesting. Tiered and stepped displays can often be designed to nest. Raising it with the factory during tooling costs nothing; raising it after the mould or jig is made costs a redesign.
  • Trimming the box, not the product. Excess void fill and generous carton tolerances are common in export packing, where cube is cheap. In FBA, that void is billed on every unit for the life of the SKU.

Model the fee before approving packaging. A display that clears its margin at one box size and fails at the next tier up is a spreadsheet problem you want to discover during sampling, not after the first container lands.

Unit prep: bagging, warnings, and label placement

Most acrylic displays require poly bagging, because the surface needs protection and because multi-part units must be kept together. The requirements that matter:

  • Suffocation warning. Any bag with an opening of five inches or more along its widest dimension needs a suffocation warning, either printed on the bag or applied as a label.
  • Barcode scannability. The bag must be transparent enough for the FNSKU to scan through it, or the label goes on the outside of the bag.
  • Bag sizing. The bag should fit the unit reasonably closely. Excess film adds bulk and looks like damage protection that failed.
  • Protective film. Acrylic normally ships with a peelable film on both faces. Decide deliberately whether the customer removes it or the factory does, and state that in the specification, because it changes both the unboxing experience and the scratch risk in transit.
  • Multi-part sets. A display that ships as several components must be bagged or boxed as one sellable unit and labelled as one unit, otherwise the network will treat the pieces as separate inventory.

FNSKU placement should be specified rather than left to the packer: one label per unit, on a flat surface, not wrapping a corner, not over a seam or an opening, and not on a face the customer sees first if presentation matters. Send print-ready artwork with the symbology stated, and require a scan verification step during packing. A factory can absolutely do this well, but only against an explicit instruction — this is the same discipline as any other line item in an acrylic display RFQ.

Master cartons, edge protection, and testing before the container loads

The master carton is where acrylic shipments are usually won or lost. Standard export cartoning assumes the buyer opens the box once. FBA assumes the box is opened, counted, and its contents handled individually, sometimes more than once.

Ask for a drop test on the finished, packed configuration before the first production run, and ask to see the result. A drop test on a sample sent by courier in a different box tells you nothing about the carton that will actually ship. Where a display has a lit or electronic element, keep that on a separate line of the specification, since it introduces its own transport and compliance considerations.

Prototyping is the right stage to settle this. Inbound routing, box content, and the fees that appear later

Getting the units right is only half of it. The shipment itself has to be created correctly, the box content information has to match what is inside, and the goods have to arrive at the fulfilment centres Amazon nominates rather than the one nearest your forwarder's warehouse.

Points where acrylic shipments commonly go wrong:

  • Box content mismatch. Mixed-SKU cartons without accurate box content data create receiving delays and manual processing charges.
  • Split shipments. Inventory placement may split your shipment across destinations, which changes freight cost and makes carton-level accuracy more important, not less.
  • Palletisation. Pallet build, height limits and stretch wrap all have requirements, and acrylic cartons should not be the bottom layer of a heavy mixed pallet.

Writing prep into the factory specification

Everything above is contractable. The practical approach is to treat FBA prep as a numbered section of the product specification rather than an email instruction, covering bagging, warning labels, FNSKU artwork and placement, scan verification, film handling, carton construction, units per carton, box content data and pallet build.
