The herringbone vs chevron wood flooring manufacturing difference is one saw cut at the end of a block — square on one, mitred on the other — and that single cut moves your price per square metre, your waste allowance, your block count, your packing list and the skill level the installer needs. Buyers routinely treat the two as interchangeable style options and then discover at quotation stage that chevron came back 15–30% dearer for the same species, same thickness, same finish.

Here is where the money actually goes, and what changes in the order document when you switch format.

The two patterns, described the way a mill sees them

Herringbone is made from rectangular blocks with square ends. Every block is a plain rectangle. The pattern comes entirely from how they are laid: the end of one block butts against the side of the next at 90°, and the resulting zigzag is set at an angle — usually 45° — to the walls. Look at a finished herringbone floor and the two arms of each "V" are offset, stepped past each other, because the blocks meet corner-to-side.

Chevron is made from blocks with mitred ends — both ends cut off-square, parallel to each other, turning the rectangle into a parallelogram. Blocks meet point-to-point, so the arms of the "V" line up exactly and form continuous unbroken lines running up the room.

That is the whole visual difference, and it is entirely produced in the cutting shop. Everything below follows from it.

Why chevron costs more from the same factory

Four separate cost drivers stack up, and only one of them is obvious.

1. The mitre eats length. Cutting both ends of a block at an angle removes material at each end. From the same rough stock, a mitred block covers less floor than a square-ended one of the same starting length. That yield loss shows up directly in the per-square-metre price of the finished floor, because the mill is buying timber by the cubic metre and selling floor by the square metre.

2. Chevron needs matched left and right blocks. A chevron floor is built from two mirror-image blocks — call them A and B — which cannot substitute for each other. The A block's mitre leans one way, the B block's the other. You need them in exactly equal numbers, and they must be cut, sanded, finished and packed as matched sets. That is a second production run, a second set of jigs or saw settings, and a QC step that has to confirm the ratio in every carton.

3. Angle error accumulates. A square end either is or is not square, and a fence catches the error immediately. A mitre at 45° is a set-up that can drift. Half a degree of error on each block does not show on one piece — it shows across a row of thirty, where the V line visibly wanders off the centre line and the installer has to open a fresh carton to find blocks that close the gap. Mills that produce chevron seriously check the angle on a shadow board or optical comparator through the run, not once at set-up.

4. The mitre exposes end grain at an angle. A square end presents flat end grain that mostly gets hidden in the joint. An angled mitre presents a long, shallow slice of end grain right along the visible V line, and end grain drinks finish faster than face grain. On an oil-finished floor especially, an uncontrolled mitre face reads as a darker line running up the middle of the pattern. Fixing that means controlling the sanding grit and the oil application on the mitre specifically — hand work, not line work.

Herringbone, by contrast, is close to straight-lay production: mill a plank, crosscut it square to length, profile the edges. That is why a factory offering herringbone, chevron and straight-lay from the same plank line — the format range Anrantabu lists for its precious-hardwood planks — will quote three different prices off the same board.

The A/B block trap that catches herringbone too

Here is the detail most buyers miss, and it causes more site delays than the price difference causes arguments.

Everyone knows chevron needs A and B blocks. What is less well known: tongue-and-groove herringbone needs them as well. The moment a herringbone block has a tongue on two edges and a groove on the other two, the block becomes handed. Laid in the pattern, roughly half the blocks must present a groove where the other half present a tongue. Mills mill them as left-hand and right-hand blocks, and they must arrive in a 50:50 ratio.

Only a square-edge, unprofiled block — the kind glued down flat and sanded on site — is truly symmetric and orderable as a single item.

The practical consequences:

  • Your purchase order should specify the A/B ratio and how it is packed: either alternating within each carton, or A cartons and B cartons in equal count. Both work; what fails is receiving 60% A and 40% B across a container.
  • Your pre-shipment inspection should count handedness, not just total pieces. An inspector checking quantity against the packing list will pass a shipment that cannot be laid.
  • Attic stock has to be ordered in pairs too. Ten spare A blocks and no B blocks is five usable repairs, at best.

Ask the factory, in writing: how do you pack A and B blocks, and what ratio does each carton hold? If the answer is vague, that is a supplier that has not shipped this format to a project where somebody counted.

The numbers that are not published — ask, do not assume

Three specification values decide your order quantity, and none of them are catalogue data. Put them to the supplier as questions.

Block dimensions. What length, width and thickness ranges does the factory actually run for herringbone and for chevron, and are those ranges the same for both? Block length matters more than it looks: it sets the scale of the pattern in the room, and a pattern scaled wrong for a 4 m-wide corridor looks busy in a way no sample board will reveal. Ask for the standard block sizes, the maximum and minimum they will cut, and whether a non-standard length carries a surcharge.

Chevron mitre angle and tolerance. Chevron is not automatically 45°. A 45° mitre gives a 90° point; shallower angles — 30° and 60° are the common alternatives — give a more elongated, steeper V that reads as a taller pattern and changes how the floor sits in a long room. Ask which angles the factory tools for, and ask the angle tolerance they hold in degrees or arc-minutes. A mill that answers with a number is measuring it.

The waste allowance they quote on. Every parquet order carries a cutting allowance over the net floor area for perimeter cuts, ramp blocks at the walls, damaged pieces and future repairs. The allowance for chevron is normally higher than for herringbone, because the perimeter of a chevron floor has to be closed with cut blocks that cannot be reused elsewhere, and because the handedness rule means an off-cut A block cannot fill a B space. Ask two questions: what allowance do you recommend for each format, and is that allowance included in the quoted area or added on top? Quotes that differ by 10% frequently differ only in this assumption — the same trap behind most cases of two factories quoting differently for the same spec.

Two things to draw out of that table.

The set-out row is a site cost, not a factory cost, but it lands on the same project budget. Herringbone tolerates a room that is slightly out of square, because the stepped joints absorb small deviations. Chevron does not: the continuous V line is a straight datum running the length of the room, and any drift in the room or in the blocks is legible along it. If your installer has not laid chevron before, price the labour accordingly.

The perimeter row is where the extra material goes. On a rectangular room with a simple border, the difference is modest. On a floor with bay windows, alcoves and a curved wall, chevron waste climbs fast, because each cut block at the perimeter is consumed rather than reused.

Working out how much to order

A workable sequence, in the order a specifier actually does it:

  1. Net floor area from the drawings, room by room. Deduct fixed islands and hearths only if they are genuinely floor-to-ceiling.
  2. Add perimeter allowance — ask the factory for their recommended figure for the chosen format, and get it in writing on the quotation.
  3. Add attic stock — a fixed additional quantity held for future repairs, ordered from the same timber lot, in matched A/B pairs. Timber colour drifts between lots and an oil-finished floor ambers with light; a replacement block bought two years later will not match.
  4. Convert to blocks. Coverage per block is length × width of the finished block; divide the total area by it, then round up to whole cartons. Ask for pieces per carton and m² per carton on the quotation so the rounding is visible.
  5. Confirm the A/B split in the same document.
  6. Confirm structure. Solid, three-layer or multi-layer changes both the price and where the floor can go — a heated slab pushes you toward an engineered build regardless of the pattern you chose.
  7. Add the trim in the same breath. Skirting, thresholds and transition strips grain-matched from the same timber batch have to be cut while that batch is still on the floor. Anrantabu produces skirting, thresholds and mouldings from the same timber lot as the flooring for exactly this reason; if trim is ordered three months later from whatever is in stock, it will read as a different floor.

Common questions

Is chevron more expensive than herringbone in every case?

Not by a fixed rule, but from a given mill in a given species it usually is, for the yield, handedness and QC reasons above. The way to find out is to ask for both formats quoted side by side in the same species, thickness and finish, with the waste allowance shown as a separate line for each. If a supplier quotes them at the same price, ask what block length they assumed — it is often a shorter block on the chevron.

What mitre angle should I specify for chevron?

Ask what the mill runs before deciding. A 45° mitre produces the familiar right-angle point; shallower angles stretch the pattern and suit long rooms. Whichever you choose, specify the angle and the tolerance in the purchase order rather than accepting "standard chevron", and check it on the sample with a bevel gauge.

Should I buy herringbone square-edge or tongue-and-groove?

Square-edge blocks are glued down and sanded and finished on site, which suits a project wanting a truly flat, monolithic surface and having a skilled finishing crew. Tongue-and-groove blocks arrive pre-finished, install faster and remove the site-finishing risk, at the cost of handedness in the packing and micro-bevels between blocks. For an imported order shipped across an ocean, pre-finished is usually the lower-risk choice.

What to ask the supplier next

Before you compare prices, send these:

  1. Quote herringbone and chevron side by side, same species, thickness, structure and finish.
  2. State the block dimensions you propose for each — length, width, thickness.
  3. For chevron: which mitre angles do you offer, and what angle tolerance do you hold?
  4. What cutting-waste allowance do you recommend for each format, and is it inside or on top of the quoted area?
  5. How are A and B blocks packed, and what ratio is in each carton?
  6. Pieces per carton and square metres per carton, so quantities round visibly.
  7. Can the skirting, thresholds and stair nosings be cut from the same timber lot, and quoted now rather than later?
  8. If any test reports or product certificates are offered, ask for the documents themselves — check the issuing body, the issue date and that the report names the legal entity you are contracting with.

Then ask for a sample that shows the pattern, not just the wood: a made-up section of at least four rows in the chosen format, so you can see how the V line closes and how the mitre face takes the finish. A single loose block tells you about the species and nothing about the manufacturing.
