The most expensive line on a first protective case quote is usually not the part. It is the tooling — the four to six weeks of calendar and the four-to-five-figure invoice that stands between your purchase order and your first sellable unit. Ready-made public molds for POS terminal protective cases exist to remove exactly that line, and a factory that keeps eighty or more of them is selling you a lead-time position rather than a lower unit price.
That distinction is worth understanding precisely, because buyers who misread it end up disappointed in two opposite directions. Some expect a public mold to be free of engineering work and are surprised when there is still a fit problem. Others expect it to give them a product nobody else can sell, and find their exact shell on a competitor's listing four months later. Neither expectation matches how these libraries actually work.
What a public mold is, and what it is not
In Chinese factory shorthand a 公模 — public mold — is a tool the factory designed, paid for, and owns, cut for a device model that is widely deployed enough to justify the investment. Anyone can order parts from it. A 私模 — private or dedicated mold — is cut against your specific requirement, paid for by you or amortised into your price, and reserved to your programme by contract.
A POS case library is a bet the factory has already placed. Payment terminals from the major brands ship in the hundreds of thousands, sit in merchant hands for years, and generate steady accessory demand from distributors, acquirers and resellers in dozens of countries. A factory that cuts the shell tool ahead of demand can quote same-week samples to every one of those buyers instead of quoting six weeks.

What you skip, and what still has to be engineered
Here is the honest split. A public mold removes the tooling stage. It does not remove the product.

Read the right-hand half of that table carefully. Everything below "first sample in hand" is work you still own, and it is where the schedule quietly goes. A 72-hour sample is a shell in whatever compound and stock colour the factory has on hand. It is not your Pantone, not your logo, not your printed artwork, and not sitting in your office — air freight and your own approval cycle sit on top. When a supplier quotes 72 hours, they are describing molding time off an existing tool. Plan the rest yourself.
The exclusivity problem, stated plainly
A public mold is a lead-time asset. It is not an exclusivity asset. That sentence is worth writing into your internal business case, because the temptation to blur it is strong when the first samples look good.
The tool belongs to the factory. It was built before you arrived and it will keep running after you leave. Your competitor — including the one you are trying to win a distributor contract away from — can order from the same cavity, in the same compound, at the same price band. If your commercial argument is "nobody else has this case," a public mold cannot support it.
What you can differentiate is everything the cavity does not define:
- Compound and durometer. A softer, higher-grip compound with better tear strength genuinely feels different in the hand.
- Colour. A matched corporate colourway across a fleet is real differentiation for a bank or acquirer programme, and it costs nothing in tooling.
- Decoration. Pad-printed or laser-debossed logos, serial or asset-tag panels, printed model identification.
- Secondary features. Hand straps, lanyard attachment, mounting plates, a fitted charging-cradle cutout — some of these are add-on parts, not shell changes.
- Packaging and kitting. For a fleet rollout, a labelled, per-site kit is often worth more to the customer than the case.
If you genuinely need shell exclusivity, you need a dedicated tool plus a written agreement covering three separate things people habitually conflate: who owns the steel, where it is physically stored, and whether the factory is barred from selling parts from it to anyone else. Those are three clauses, not one. One more caution: a dedicated tool gives you exclusivity of the tool. It does not by itself give you exclusivity of the design, unless the design originated with you and is documented as yours. If the factory's engineers designed the case around your brief, put the ownership of that design in writing at the same time.
Three things that go wrong with an existing tool
The library is a real advantage. These are the three failure modes buyers hit, and all three are avoidable with questions.
The mold was cut against a different hardware revision
Payment terminals get quiet mid-life hardware revisions. A SAM slot cover moves three millimetres, a camera ring changes diameter, a rubber foot changes height, a printer door hinge gets reinforced. The device model number on the box does not change. A mold cut against an early revision can produce a case that will not seat cleanly on the units currently shipping in your market.
The fix costs one courier bill: send two or three units of your actual current stock, sourced from the same channel you will be selling into, and require a fit sample moulded and photographed on those exact units before you release a production order. Do not accept a fit check performed on the factory's own reference device.
The cutouts were engineered for somebody else's accessories
A public mold was designed for the first customer who justified it. Their cradle, their stand, their handle, their peripheral. If your merchants dock the terminal into a charging base every night, the case has to enter and leave that base — with the case on. If the fleet uses a magnetic mount or a pole clamp, the case has to clear it. Cavity geometry is fixed; you find this out on the sample, not in the drawing.
Send the accessory, not a photo of it. A sample that fits the device perfectly and fouls the charging cradle is a returned container.
The tool has run history you cannot see in a catalogue photo
Molds wear. Cavity surfaces get polished, welded and re-cut over their life. Vents clog. Parting-line faces relax and flash gets heavier. A tool that has run six figures of shots does not produce the same crisp texture and thin witness line it did on day one — and the sample photo in the catalogue may date from day one.
Ask for a current sample moulded this month off the specific tool your order would run on, and ask three factual questions about it: approximate accumulated shot count, date of last polish or repair, and whether any cavity has been weld-repaired. A factory that keeps mold records will answer. One that changes the subject has told you something too.
Matching your model, and what this route does to your economics
The number nobody publishes: which models are covered
Here is the practical gap in every public-mold offer, including this one. "80+ ready-made molds covering major POS brands and models" is a capacity statement, not a catalogue. No factory of this type publishes a searchable brand-and-model list, partly because the list changes and partly because naming other companies' hardware in marketing material invites trademark arguments.
So the match check is a manual step you have to initiate. Treat it as the first task in your sourcing process, not an afterthought:
- Send the exact device model designation as printed on the terminal's label, including any regional suffix.
- Send four photographs — front, back, both sides — with a ruler or a coin in frame for scale.
- Send the overall dimensions you measure yourself, in millimetres, plus the location of any port, slot or camera you need open.
- Ask directly: do you have an existing mold for this model, or would this need a new tool?
- If the answer is yes, ask for the current sample described above before discussing price.
- If the answer is no, ask separately for the dedicated tooling quote and lead time so you can compare the two paths honestly.
That sequence takes a week and eliminates almost every downstream surprise. A supplier that runs an in-house mold shop — CNC tool fabrication, a dedicated engineering team doing 3D modelling and structural analysis, thousands of completed custom mold projects — can also tell you whether a near-miss model is adaptable from an existing cavity rather than starting from bare steel, which is a middle path worth asking about explicitly.
Where near-zero tooling changes how many bets you can place
The interesting consequence of near-zero upfront tooling is not the money saved. It is the number of bets you can place.
With a dedicated tool per model, testing five POS models in a new market means five tooling invoices and five multi-week waits, so you pick two and hope. With an existing library, you can order modest quantities across five models, put them in front of real merchants, and let sell-through pick the winners. The tooling investment then goes only into the models that earned it — including, if you want exclusivity on the winner, a dedicated tool cut afterwards with real demand data behind it.
That sequencing is the actual strategic value of a mold library, and it is invisible if you only compare unit prices. What to ask the supplier next
Put these in one email and require written answers before you place a first order.
- Do you have an existing mold for this exact device model and hardware revision? Which revision was it cut against?
- Can you mould and photograph a fit sample on the units I ship you, rather than on your reference device?
- What is the accumulated shot count on that tool, when was it last polished or repaired, and has any cavity been weld-repaired?
- Does the 72-hour sample quote include colour matching, printing or logo work — or is that additional calendar?
- What compounds and durometer range can this cavity run, and what is the shrink factor it was cut to?
- What is the MOQ from this public mold, and what is it from a dedicated mold for the same part?
- Can any public mold be made exclusive to one buyer, and on what commercial terms?
- If I fund a dedicated tool instead: who owns the steel, where is it stored, and will parts from it be sold to anyone else?
- Will the case clear the charging cradle, stand or mount I am sending you, with the case fitted?
- If this model is not in the library, what is the tooling cost and lead time to cut it — and can an adjacent existing cavity be adapted instead?
The answers to questions 3, 7 and 8 tell you more about a supplier's record-keeping and commercial honesty than any capability list will.
