Ask for the business licence image and read four fields off it: the registered company name in Chinese, the 18-character USCC, the registration status, and the registered address. Then verify those against the registry rather than against the brochure. Two details matter more than buyers expect:
- The business scope. For a tooling supplier you want to see both manufacturing or processing of molds and hardware and an import-and-export clause. Manufacturing scope without the export clause means someone else's company will appear on your commercial invoice; export clause without manufacturing scope means you are talking to a trading house. Both together mean the company can contract, invoice and ship under its own name.
- Registered capital. It is not a bank balance and it is not a quality signal, but it is the ceiling on shareholder liability, and it should inform your payment structure. A modest registered capital is normal for a tooling workshop. It is also a reason not to pre-pay a large multi-code program in full.

Then check what the registry cannot tell you
Registration confirms a legal person. It says nothing about tooling capability, and the gap between the two is where buyers get hurt.
Three specific blind spots apply to this category:
Scale. Registry data can put a company in a micro-enterprise band without that being a defect — a die shop with a handful of skilled toolmakers can outproduce a larger shop with none. But it does change your sequencing. A generic factory tour tells you very little about tooling. - The EDM area. Drill point die cavities are formed by electrical discharge machining before grinding and polishing. Ask which type of EDM, and if sinker EDM is used, ask to see the electrode rack. Electrodes are made per die code and they accumulate — the rack is an honest inventory of what that shop has actually run. A supplier that quotes twenty codes and owns electrodes for three is telling you something.
- The grinding and polishing benches. Ask what the finishing sequence is on the cavity and the point-forming surfaces, and who does it. In this trade polishing is where set life is won or lost, and it is usually one or two named people.
- The heat treatment question. For SKH high-speed steel dies (M2, M9, M51 grades) — the material choice against carbide is a separate decision — ask whether heat treatment is in-house or outsourced and whether batch records travel with the dies. Is a small workshop a red flag for drill point dies?
