An acrylic display fails inspection for reasons that do not show up on a furniture or electronics checklist. The part can be dimensionally perfect, structurally sound and still be rejected on a retail floor because a bonded joint has gone cloudy, or because a hairline scratch catches the store lighting at exactly the angle a shopper stands. Optical quality is the product. That is why a generic pre-shipment inspection booked against a generic checklist tends to pass acrylic that your customer will later send back.
This is the checklist to hand your inspector — or to work through yourself — before an acrylic display order leaves China. It assumes you have already chosen a supplier and agreed a specification. Why acrylic fails inspection differently
Three properties of PMMA drive almost every defect you will argue about.
It is transparent, so every internal flaw is visible. A bubble in a sofa frame is invisible; a bubble in a 10 mm acrylic base is the first thing a buyer sees. It is soft — roughly the scratch resistance of a phone screen without the coating — so it accumulates damage during handling, assembly and transit rather than during moulding. And it is solvent-bonded rather than glued or welded, which means joints can look finished on the day of production and develop visible defects days later as the solvent finishes evaporating.
The practical consequence: inspection timing matters more for acrylic than for most categories. An inspector who checks bonded assemblies within a few hours of fabrication will pass joints that turn cloudy in the carton. Ask for finished goods to have been assembled and packed before the inspection date, not during it.
Before the inspector arrives: define “acceptable” in writing
Most acrylic inspection disputes are not disagreements about what the inspector saw. They are disagreements about whether what he saw was allowed. Acrylic has no universal cosmetic standard, so if you have not written one, the factory will apply its own — and its own is usually the one it has been shipping to its domestic customers.
Four documents need to exist before the booking:
- The approved golden sample, sealed and retained at the factory, with a duplicate you hold. Photographs are not a substitute; you cannot photograph edge clarity.
- A cosmetic specification that states viewing distance, lighting condition and maximum permitted defect size per zone. “No scratches” is unenforceable. “No scratch visible at 500 mm under 800 lux on Zone A surfaces” is.
- A zoning drawing splitting each part into Zone A (customer-facing, strictest), Zone B (visible but secondary) and Zone C (hidden, functional only). Applying one standard to every surface makes displays needlessly expensive.
- The signed sampling plan — the AQL levels and what happens on failure. More on that below.

Optical and surface defects
Check under diffuse light at the distance your specification names, then again under a single point source held at a low angle — the second pass reveals scratches and polish irregularities the first will miss.
- Scratches and scuffs. Separate them into “in the material” and “in the masking film.” Film damage is not a defect. Instruct the inspector to peel film on the sampled units, because damage underneath is common and factories rarely check it after masking.
- Crazing. Networks of fine surface cracks, usually near machined edges, drilled holes or bonded joints. Crazing indicates internal stress and it propagates. Treat any crazing on a load-bearing part as a major defect, not cosmetic — the part will eventually crack there.
- Silvering and bubbles in bonds. Silvery streaks or trapped bubbles inside a solvent-bonded joint mean insufficient solvent, insufficient dwell time or contaminated surfaces. On a clear display this is the defect buyers notice most.
- Edge quality. Saw-cut edges should be specified as machined, sanded, flame-polished or diamond-polished. These are four different costs and four different appearances. Flame polishing introduces stress, so on parts that will also be bonded or drilled, a diamond-polished edge is usually the safer specification.
- Colour and light transmission consistency across the batch, and against the golden sample. Sheet from different production lots varies. This is worth checking explicitly when an order has been split across suppliers — a real risk with short lead times.
Material substitution belongs in this section too. Extruded acrylic is cheaper than cast and behaves differently when machined and bonded; substituting one for the other is a change your inspector should be briefed to look for. Construction, hardware and stability
Displays hold weight and get handled by the public, so the structural checks are not optional.
- Joint integrity. Apply gentle load in the direction the joint will see in service. Bonds should not creak or show new crazing. Sample destructively if the order size justifies it — agree the destructive quantity in advance so it is not argued about on the day.
- Thickness verification with callipers at several points per part, against the specification rather than against the sample. Under-gauge sheet is one of the most common silent cost reductions, and one of the easiest to measure. - Load test at the rated capacity, held rather than momentary. Watch for deflection and for creep at the joints.
- Stability on a level surface and on a 5–10° incline for floor-standing units. Tall narrow displays that tip are a liability issue, not a quality issue.
- Hardware and fasteners — correct grade, no over-torqued inserts, no stress crazing radiating from screw holes. Over-torquing into acrylic is the single most common cause of field cracking.
- Assembly fit for flat-packed units: assemble a sample from the carton, using only the supplied instructions and hardware, and time it. If your inspector cannot assemble it, neither can a store associate.
Dimensions, printing and fitment
Measure to the drawing, not to the sample — and confirm the drawing and the sample agree before you start. Where a display has to fit a fixture, a shelf or a specific product, check the fit with the actual product rather than the nominal dimension.
For printed and decorated parts, verify placement tolerance, registration, and adhesion. A simple tape pull on printed areas will find under-cured UV printing before your customer does. Confirm print orientation on second-surface printing — reversed artwork on a clear panel is a total loss, and it is a mistake that survives all the way to the container because the part looks correct from the back.
Packaging and transit
More acrylic is damaged after it passes inspection than fails during it. Packaging is therefore part of the quality check, not an afterthought.
Confirm that masking film remains on all surfaces that will be handled, that units are individually wrapped rather than stacked bare, that corner protection is present on rigid parts, and that inner cartons are not so tight that they load the part. Then do the drop test you agreed — on a packed carton, from the specified height, on corner and edge. Check carton markings, quantity per carton against the packing list, and that the shipping marks match the documents your freight forwarder is expecting. Mismatched carton counts cause more customs delay than defective goods do.
Sampling plan and the pass/fail line
Most buyers inspect to a recognised sampling standard rather than checking every unit. Level II general inspection under ISO 2859-1 (or its ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 equivalent) is the usual starting point, with acceptance limits set per defect class — commonly a tighter limit for major defects than for minor ones. Retail display buyers frequently tighten the major-defect limit relative to what a factory proposes, because a display that looks wrong on a shelf has failed even when it functions.
Three things to settle in writing before the first order, not after the first failure:
- Defect classification. Which findings are critical, major and minor. Crazing on a load-bearing joint, reversed artwork and under-gauge material are worth naming explicitly as major.
- What happens on a fail. Sorting, rework and re-inspection at whose cost, and who pays for the second inspector visit.
- Who books the inspector. A third party you appoint reports to you. A factory-arranged inspection is a useful internal check but is not independent, and should not be the only one on a first order.
None of this requires a large order to justify. Can I inspect acrylic displays without visiting China?
You can inspect acrylic displays in China without travelling: a third-party inspector you appoint attends the factory on your behalf, works to the checklist and cosmetic specification you supply, and reports back with photographs before the goods ship. When should the inspection happen?
Book a pre-shipment inspection for acrylic displays when production is substantially complete and the goods are packed — commonly once at least 80% of the order is finished and cartonised — and leave time after bonding before the inspector attends. For acrylic specifically, allow time after bonding before inspecting, because solvent-bonded joints can develop visible cloudiness or bubbles in the days after assembly. Is a factory's own quality report enough?
A factory's own quality report is useful but it is not independent evidence, because the party being checked is also the party doing the checking. The report tells you what the factory measured and is worth reading, particularly for dimensional data. On a first order, or after any change of material, tooling or subcontractor, commission an inspection that reports to you rather than to the supplier.
