Two quotes come back for the same line item: hand-scraped antique walnut, wide plank, oiled. One is close to double the other. Before you assume the cheap one is a trading company padding a margin down, look at what the phrase actually commits either supplier to. "Hand-scraped" is not a surface specification. It is a category that runs from a craftsman pulling a draw knife down a board to a steel roller pressing a repeating pattern into it at production speed, and nothing in the words on the quote tells you which one you are buying.

That matters more on a wood floor than on almost any other product you import, because texture is the part the client's eye lands on and the part you cannot fix on site. A colour mismatch can sometimes be blended with a tint. A repeating machine emboss cannot be un-pressed. And when you reorder for phase two of the same project eighteen months later, the texture is the variable most likely to come back different — because it is the one nobody wrote down.

This is how to read what you are being offered, how to test a sample in ten minutes, and how to write a texture spec that survives to the second batch.

What "hand-scraped" actually covers

Treat the phrase as a family of four processes with different costs, different looks and very different repeat risk.

True hand scraping. An operator works the board with a draw knife or scraper, taking shallow, irregular scoops along the length. The marks vary in depth, length and spacing because a human hand varies. Board ends get worked as deliberately as board centres. It is slow, it is labour, and it is the reason a hand-worked floor prices where it does.

Relief carving. A step beyond scraping: the surface is cut to bring out or exaggerate the grain structure, sometimes following the figure of the board, sometimes to a designed profile. It removes more material than scraping and needs a thicker wear layer to survive it. This is a separate skill from parquet assembly or sanding, and factories that do it staff for it specifically.

Wire brushing. Rotating brushes abrade the soft early wood and leave the hard late wood proud, so the texture follows the growth rings. It is a real texture, it does not repeat on a fixed interval, and it is not hand scraping — but it is often sold under the same heading.

Machine embossing. A patterned roller, or an embossed press plate, transfers a texture onto the board. Modern versions are convincing in a photograph. The catch is geometric: a roller has a circumference, and a press plate has a length. Whatever the pattern is, it comes back around. Depending on the tool and the board length, the same sequence of marks can reappear every second board, every fifth, or every twelfth.

None of these is dishonest in itself. Embossed flooring at an embossed price is a fair product. The problem is a hand-scraped price for an embossed floor, or a hand-scraped sample followed by an embossed production run.

The ten-board test

Do this with the sample set, and again with the first production lot before it ships. It takes ten minutes and it settles the question.

  1. Ask for ten boards pulled at random from a production run, not one presentation board. One board proves nothing — the sample board a supplier hands you is, reasonably enough, a good one. If the boards come in cartons, ask for them across at least two cartons from different pallets, because boards inside one carton usually came off the same pass.
  2. Lay all ten face up on the floor, side by side, in the order they came out of the packaging. Do not sort them.
  3. Kill the overhead light. Put a phone torch flat on the floor at one end and shine it along the surface, almost parallel to it. Raking light throws every scoop and ridge into shadow. Under flat ceiling light you will see nothing.
  4. Walk the row and look for sequence, not for individual marks. You are not asking "does board three look like board seven" — you are asking "does the same run of marks, in the same order, at the same spacing, appear on more than one board?" A repeat announces itself as rhythm.
  5. Now look at the board ends. On hand work, the texture runs off the end of the board the same way it runs through the middle. On a rolled or pressed surface, the texture often fades, stops short, or shows an entry and exit mark within an inch or two of each end, because the tool lifts.
  6. Finally, look at whether the texture respects the grain. Hand work and brushing follow what the board is doing — a scraper skips over hard figure, a brush eats the soft rings. A pressed pattern lands where the roller says, running straight across cathedral figure without acknowledging it.

If you find a repeat, you have not necessarily found a bad supplier. You have found a factual answer to a question the quote left open, and you can now negotiate on the right product.

Three details that separate buyers who have done this before from buyers who have not:

  • Texture and wear layer are one decision. A deep relief cut on a thin top layer leaves nothing to sand later. If the floor is engineered, the texture depth has to be argued against the wear layer thickness before either is fixed. A structural comparison of solid, three-layer and multi-layer construction is the right conversation to have first.
  • The finish decides whether you see the texture at all. A thick film coating pools in the scoops and rounds off the ridges — you paid for texture and then filled it in. A penetrating oil sits in the wood and leaves the profile sharp. That is a real trade-off with real maintenance consequences, covered in hand-rubbed wax oil versus UV lacquer.
  • Species changes the same tool's result. The identical scraping technique reads deep and dramatic on a soft, open-grained timber and subtle on a dense one. Approving a texture on a teak sample tells you very little about how it will look in walnut.

Writing a texture spec that survives to batch two

The failure mode is not batch one. Batch one is the sample you approved. The failure is batch two, cut nine months later by a different pair of hands with the sample long gone. Everything below exists to prevent that.

Make the control sample the contract. Words like "medium scrape, lightly distressed" mean nothing across a language boundary and a year. A physical board does. Have three identical control boards made from the approved run: one to you, one held by the factory, one sealed and held by whoever will inspect. Sign and date all three across the face and the back edge so a swap is visible. This is the same discipline as a colour standard in textiles, and it works for the same reason — the sample approval process is where a reorder is either protected or lost.

Measure the sample rather than inventing a number. Do not write "0.8 mm scrape depth" into a PO because it sounds rigorous. Take a depth gauge to the approved board, record the shallowest and deepest mark you find, and write that measured range plus a tolerance. Now the number is defensible because it came from a board both parties are holding.

Specify the things that are countable. Marks per running metre (a range, not a figure). Whether ends are worked. Whether edges are micro-bevelled, eased or square, because the bevel reads as a shadow line in raking light and changes the whole floor. Sheen level after finishing, measured on the textured surface rather than a flat offcut.

Specify the randomisation rule. On a hand-worked floor this is the single most useful line most buyers omit: no two adjacent boards in a carton shall carry the same mark sequence, and boards shall be packed from mixed operator output rather than by operator. It costs the factory nothing and it kills the banding that makes an installed floor look mechanical.

Ask how the factory holds the standard between people. A workshop running hand texture at volume is coordinating a lot of individual hands. Those are volume figures, not consistency figures. The question you still have to ask any workshop of that size is how a texture standard is transferred between operators, and whether your signed board is retained and matched against at reorder. Ask it in writing, and get the retention period in the answer.

Approve the texture on the finished surface. Not on a bare scraped board with the oil to follow. Oil darkens, and it darkens unevenly across a textured surface — the scoops drink more. Approve what you are actually buying.

Common questions

Is machine-embossed flooring worth buying?

Often, yes — for rental fit-outs, high-turnover hospitality, and any project where unit cost governs. It is stable, consistent, and cheaper. The objection is not the product; it is paying hand-work prices for it, or discovering the substitution after installation. Ask directly whether the texture is applied by roller or by hand, and put the answer in the PO.

Can a factory reproduce my existing floor's texture from a photograph?

Not reliably. Send a physical offcut if one exists. A photograph loses depth entirely, and depth is most of what you are trying to match. If no offcut exists, expect to iterate through two or three samples and budget the weeks for it.

Does hand-scraped texture hide site damage or show it?

It hides small damage better than a flat floor, because there is already visual noise. It shows deep gouges worse, because the repair has to be blended into an irregular surface. A penetrating oil finish helps here — spot repair is possible in a way it is not on a cured film.

How much extra should I order?

More than for a flat floor. Textured boards carry a higher visual-defect rejection rate at installation, and cutting a scraped board short can put a machine-clean end grain in the middle of a room. Agree the acceptance criteria for texture before the run, so "rejected" means something both sides recognise.

What to ask the supplier next

Send these as a numbered list and ask for numbered answers — the pattern that makes any spec sheet to a Chinese factory work.

  1. Is the texture applied by hand, by brush, by roller or by press? If any part is mechanical, what is the tool repeat length?
  2. Can you send ten random boards from a real production run, across two cartons, rather than one presentation board?
  3. What measured depth range does the approved sample sit in, and will you write that range on the retained board?
  4. Do you retain a signed, dated control sample, and for how long after shipment?
  5. How is texture consistency held between operators, and how is it checked between lots?
  6. Are there named texture profiles or catalogue codes I can reorder against, or is every texture bespoke to a sample?
  7. Is the texture approved before or after finishing, and can I approve on the finished surface?
  8. What is the maximum texture depth you would apply to the wear layer thickness I am specifying?
