A vanity table and a writing desk arrive at a factory as almost the same drawing. Four legs or two panel gables, a flat top somewhere between 700 and 780 mm off the floor, one or two drawers, a finish specification. Buyers routinely quote them together and expect one price structure to cover both. Then the first container is classified in two different customs lines, the vanity comes back with mirror complaints and the desk comes back with cable complaints, and it becomes clear they were never the same product.
The difference is not styling. It is that a vanity is a bedroom product built around a mirror and small-item storage, and a desk is a work product built around load, legroom and cable routing. Every decision that costs money downstream follows from that split.
Why the two sit in different customs lines
Heading 9403 of the Harmonized System divides wooden furniture by the room it is designed for, not by how it looks. Wooden furniture of a kind used in offices falls under subheading 9403.30, wooden furniture of a kind used in the bedroom falls under 9403.50, and other wooden furniture falls under 9403.60. A writing desk normally follows the office line; a dressing table normally follows the bedroom line. Where a piece is genuinely dual-purpose, classification turns on its design and principal use, which is a determination for your customs broker rather than your supplier.
The detail that surprises people is the stool. A vanity set shipped with an upholstered stool does not classify as one article — seats are covered by heading 9401, and an upholstered stool with a wooden frame sits under 9401.61. If your commercial invoice presents a vanity set as a single line at a single unit price, the entry may need to be split, and splitting it after arrival is slower and more expensive than describing it correctly at the outset. Confirm every code against the current tariff schedule for your destination before you quote a landed cost. Subheadings are stable but national statistical suffixes and duty treatment are not, and a code copied from a previous supplier's paperwork is not evidence of anything.
The work surface is the whole product
On both items, the top is what a customer touches for years and what a review photograph shows. Its construction decides most of the failure modes.
Solid wood tops move with humidity, which is why breadboard ends, floating fasteners or slotted screw holes appear in a good drawing and why a top screwed rigidly to an apron eventually splits. Veneered engineered panels are dimensionally calmer and give you grain matching across a wide surface, but the edge treatment becomes the weak point: a thin edgebanding on a desk that meets a chair arm twice a day will chip, and a 2 mm banding or a solid lipping will not. High-pressure laminate and melamine surfaces are the most abrasion-tolerant and the least repairable.
Three surface tests are worth naming in the specification rather than leaving to a general "quality finish" clause. Abrasion resistance matters for desks; a mug and a laptop foot move across the same 300 mm of surface daily. Chemical resistance matters more for vanities, because the products that live on them — acetone-based removers, alcohol toners, fragrance — attack lacquers that survive everything else in a house. Heat resistance matters for both, and is where a cheaper finish system usually gives way first. Write the test methods and the acceptance level into the purchase order and confirm the factory can evidence them on the actual finish system, not on a generic panel.
Mirrors and glass move the risk profile
The moment a mirror enters the bill of materials, breakage in transit stops being a rare event and becomes something to be engineered against. Three specification points do most of the work.
- Backing. A safety backing film holds fragments together if the mirror breaks. It is cheap at the factory, and it is the difference between a damaged item and an item that arrives as loose glass inside a carton.
- Mounting. Rigid mounting into a wooden frame transmits every shock from the pallet into the glass. An elastic mount, foam gasket or clip system with a tolerance gap absorbs it.
- Edge finish. Ground and polished edges are less likely to propagate a crack from a chip than raw-cut edges, and they are also what a customer sees on a frameless vanity mirror.
Glass desktops raise a different question: whether tempering is required, what thickness, and how the panel is supported. A tempered panel that fails does so completely, so the support design and the edge protection are not cosmetic choices. Drawers and hardware are where returns come from
Neither product has much structure to fail. What fails is the moving part. On a vanity the drawers are shallow, wide and lightly loaded, and the complaint is racking and a drawer front that sits crooked. On a desk the drawers are deeper, carry weight, and the complaint is sag and a slide that stops running smoothly after a few months.
The specification points that matter are the slide type and its load rating, whether soft-close is a separate mechanism or integral, the drawer box construction, and the fixing method for the handle. Full-extension ball-bearing slides behave differently under sustained load from side-mounted roller slides, and the two are not interchangeable at the same price. Dovetailed or dowelled solid drawer boxes hold a square better than stapled boxes over years of use. Handles screwed into a bare particleboard front will loosen; the same handle into a hardwood or reinforced block will not.
Ask for hardware brand and model numbers in the specification, and ask what the substitution policy is if that item is unavailable at production time. Undocumented hardware substitution between the approved sample and mass production is one of the most common causes of a delivered product that is technically to drawing and visibly not the same object. Cable management is now part of the desk brief
A writing desk sold today is nearly always used with at least a laptop charger, and often a monitor and a dock. If the brief does not address that, the customer solves it themselves and the product looks improvised.
The decisions are small but need making early because several of them require tooling or drilling fixtures: whether there is a grommet and at what diameter, whether a cable tray is fitted and whether it is metal or fabric, whether the back panel is closed or open, and whether any powered component is integrated. That last one changes the project substantially — a desk with an integrated socket or USB module is an electrical product in most destination markets, carrying its own approvals, marking and liability. Unless that is a deliberate strategic decision with the certification budget behind it, keep power out of the desk and let the customer supply it.
Vanities have their own version of this question in lighting. A mirror with integrated LED lighting is a different product from a mirror, with a driver, a switch, a wiring loom and a set of destination-market requirements attached.
