The floor is down. It is the right species, the right width, the right texture, and it cost what a floor like that costs. Then the trim carpenter arrives with skirting bought locally — same species, near enough colour, ordered in a hurry because the container did not include enough — and fits it round the whole perimeter. Now every wall in the building has a line along the bottom of it that does not quite belong to the floor, and the doorways have transition strips in a fourth shade of brown.

That is the last five per cent of a job, and it is entirely capable of ruining the first ninety-five. Nobody photographs the skirting. Everybody sees it.

Trim goes wrong for a boringly structural reason: it is ordered last, it is off the critical path, its quantity is estimated rather than measured, and by the time anyone realises the estimate was short, the timber lot that produced the floor has been cut up and sold. Everything below is about pulling that decision forward into the floor order, where it belongs.

Same species is not the same thing as same lot

Two consignments of walnut trim, identical grade, identical mill, eight weeks apart, will not be the same colour. Different logs, different growth regions, different sapwood share, different kiln charge. This is normal timber behaviour, not a supplier failing, and no amount of complaining changes it.

Three things make the mismatch more visible on trim than anywhere else:

Trim is cut from different parts of the log. Flooring wants wide, clean face stock. Skirting and mouldings are usually ripped from narrower material, sometimes from the offcuts of the flooring operation, sometimes from stock that would not have made floor grade. Same lot, different position in the log, different figure. Ask explicitly whether trim is cut from the same log run and the same kiln charge, not merely the same species — that is the question with an actual answer behind it.

Penetrating oil finishes report the timber honestly. A pigmented film coating can be used to level colour between batches. Oil saturates the wood and shows you whatever is underneath. Hand-rubbed oil is why a lot of buyers approach a workshop-scale maker in the first place, and it is exactly why the lot discipline matters more on that kind of floor than on a lacquered commodity one.

The mismatch sits at eye-scan height in a vertical plane. A slightly-off floorboard in the middle of a room disappears among fifty others. A slightly-off skirting board runs in a continuous horizontal line under raking daylight from every window.

The fix is procedural and cheap: buy floor, stairs and trim as one order, from one lot, finished on one schedule with one oil batch, and say so on the purchase order. Factories that describe themselves as floor-to-trim suppliers are set up for exactly that sequencing. The components, and what each one is actually for

Half the trim errors on a job are not colour errors. They are the wrong component chosen for the junction.

Three details that separate a trim order that works from one that does not:

  • The expansion gap dictates the skirting. A wood floor needs a perimeter gap so it can move. If your installer leaves 10–12 mm and you have specified a scotia with an 8 mm foot, you will see the gap for the life of the floor. Decide the gap and the covering profile together, and give the installer a maximum gap he is allowed to leave.
  • Never pin the scotia to the floor. Skirting and scotia fix to the wall; the floor slides underneath. Fix the covering profile down into the boards and you have nailed the floor's perimeter in place, which is the fastest route to cupping and open joints in the middle of the room.
  • Thresholds wear differently from floors. A door saddle takes concentrated traffic in a strip a few centimetres wide, and takes it from both directions. Cutting one from ordinary floor stock is common and shortsighted; ask whether a thicker section is available for saddles in the same lot.

Tooling, profiles, and why quotes for the same trim differ

If you send a drawing of a bespoke skirting profile, somebody has to grind a cutter to that shape. That is a real cost with a real lead time, and the way different suppliers handle it is one of the everyday reasons quotes for the same spec come back at different numbers.

Ask four questions and the differences usually explain themselves:

  1. Is my profile in your existing catalogue, or does it need new tooling?
  2. Is tooling charged as a one-off line, amortised into the metre rate, or absorbed?
  3. Who owns the tooling once I have paid for it, and is it retained for reorders?
  4. How long is retained tooling kept before it is reground for someone else?

A supplier who absorbs tooling into the metre rate looks cheaper on a small first order and more expensive on the reorder. A supplier who charges it as a line looks expensive on day one and cheap thereafter. Neither is wrong; you just need to know which model you are comparing.

The same logic applies to standard heights. Skirting height is a design decision with a cost consequence — taller skirting means wider stock, which means better material, which means a different price band. If you are matching an existing building, measure the existing skirting before you specify, including the profile depth, because a modern flat profile next to a Victorian moulded one reads as a mistake even in the correct timber.

How much to order, and the length nobody asks about

Trim quantity is where projects lose money in both directions — running short costs a second shipment and a colour mismatch; over-ordering wildly costs cash and container space.

The method:

  1. Measure the running perimeter of every room, not the floor area. Deduct door openings. Add the architrave runs separately if they are in scope.
  2. Add for cuts. Every internal corner is a mitre, every external corner is two, and each mitre wastes the end of a stick. A wall slightly longer than your standard stick length forces a joint and wastes the remainder.
  3. Add a waste allowance on top — more for a room with many corners than for a long straight corridor, more for a figured or highly variable timber where boards get rejected on appearance.
  4. Add a project reserve for damage during fit-out, which is not the same as cutting waste. Trim is fitted early and damaged late, by other trades.
  5. Then ask the factory to hold an over-run from the same lot. This is the single highest-value question in the whole trim conversation. If a reserve of your lot sits at the factory, phase two of the project, or a repair after a leak in year three, is a shipping problem instead of a matching problem. Ask whether it is possible, for how long, and what it costs.

And the question almost nobody asks: what is the longest stick you can actually get? There are two different limits and they rarely coincide.

  • The production limit is what the moulder and the available stock can run.
  • The packing limit is what can be crated, loaded and shipped without arriving bowed or snapped. Long trim is fragile in exactly one axis and travels badly, and container geometry sets a hard ceiling regardless of what the machine can produce.

Get both numbers. If the production limit is longer than the packing limit, decide deliberately whether you want fewer joints on site or lower damage risk in transit — and specify crating for the trim separately, because a bundle of mouldings loose in a container is a claim waiting to happen. If you are consolidating a floor, stair and trim package into one shipment, the FCL and LCL trade-offs decide how much protection is economic.

Sequencing trim into the floor order

The reason trim goes wrong is almost never that a factory cannot make it. It is that it was not in the room when the decisions were made. A workable sequence:

  • At quotation: include trim line items with estimated quantities, even rough ones, so the timber lot is sized to include them.
  • At sample approval: approve the trim profiles on the same signed, dated sample set as the floor, finished the same way. A trim sample in raw wood tells you nothing about how it will look next to an oiled floor.
  • At lot allocation: name the lot on the PO for floor, stairs and trim together. If stairs are in scope, the same argument runs through treads, risers and nosings cut from one lot, and the texture logic runs through how the surface texture is specified.
  • At production: ask for trim to be finished in the same oil batch as the floor, not on a later schedule.
  • At packing: trim crated separately and labelled by room or by profile, so the site can find what it needs without opening everything.
  • At delivery: the reserve stays at the factory, documented, with a named lot reference on the paperwork.

Common questions

Can I just buy trim locally in the same species?

You can, and for a painted skirting behind a wood floor it is often the right call — paint solves the matching problem completely. For natural or oiled trim meant to read as part of the floor, local stock in the same species will differ visibly. Decide which of the two you are doing, and stop trying to have both.

Should skirting be finished before or after installation?

Factory-finished is more consistent — the coats are applied and buffed in controlled conditions rather than on site with dust in the air. The trade-off is that mitre cuts on site expose raw ends that need touching in. Ask for a small quantity of the finishing oil to be shipped with the order for exactly that.

How do I handle an uneven wall?

Skirting cannot follow a bowed wall without scribing, and scribing eats height. If you know the walls are poor, specify slightly taller skirting than the design calls for so there is material to scribe away. This is cheaper than discovering it on site.

Is it worth ordering a custom profile at all?

For a one-off residential job, usually not — a catalogue profile in your lot beats a bespoke profile in someone else's. For a repeatable collection, a hospitality group, or a private-label programme, a bespoke profile with retained tooling is what makes the second and third project fast.

What to ask the supplier next

  1. Is the trim cut from the same log run and kiln charge as my floor, or only the same species?
  2. Are the profiles run in-house, and on whose moulders?
  3. Which skirting heights and profiles are catalogue items, and which need new tooling?
  4. What does tooling cost, who owns it, and how long is it retained?
  5. What is the maximum length you can produce, and separately, the maximum you can pack and ship intact?
  6. Can an over-run from my lot be reserved at the factory for a later phase — for how long, and at what cost?
  7. Will the trim be finished in the same oil batch as the floor?
  8. How is trim crated and labelled, and can it be sorted by room?
  9. Do you supply thresholds in a thicker section than floor stock?
